Voy a hacer un repaso a lo que fueron los inicios de la banda Death Cab for Cutie hasta ahora:
El cuarteto de indie pop americano de Bellingham, Washington Death Cab for Cutie comenzaron en 1997 con el proyecto en solitario del cantante y guitarrista Ben Gibbard, que antes había grabado con el nombre de All-Time Quarterback. Y debido a su éxito que publicaron en cassette, "You Can Play These Songs Chords ", le inspiraron para reclutar a toda una banda, incluyendo al guitattista y organanista Christopher Walla, bajista Nick Harmer, y batería Nathan Good.
En el verano del 98 publicaron du debut álbum "Something About Airplanes" ya como Death Cab for Cutie ( DCFC).
Les siguieron en el 2000 los álbumes "We Have the Facts and Were Voting Yes", con el que el batería dejó la banda y fue sustituido por Michael Schorr. Más tarde publicaron el EP " The Forgidden Love"y también el álbum "The Photo Album".
En el 2003, el batería fue vuelto a sustituir por Eureka Farms que se unió a la banda y en octubre de ese mismo año estrenaron su próximo álbum "Transatlanticism", con el que estuvieron de gira hasta la primavera del 2004, cuando Death Cab For Cutie grabaron siete nuevas canciones incluidas en " The John Byrd E.P"., lo llamaron así por el ingeniero de sonido que les acompañó durante la gira, John Byrd, y salió publicado en el 2005 con Barsuk Records, de la que decidirían separarse y establecer lazos con el sello Atlantic Records, debutando y publicando con ellos "Plans" en agosto del 2005, que vendió alrededor de 90,000 coipas en la primera semana del lanzamiento y llegando a ocupar el puesto número cuatro de álbumes en las listas de éxitos en USA.
Ahora en el 2008 han publicado "Narrow Stairs"
El productor de la banda Chris Walla habla del álbum diciendo:
"in full swing;we're six songs in.", " thus far it's pretty weird and pretty spectacular; lots of blood. It's creepy and heavy... we've got a ten minute long Can jam, and had you suggested that possibility to me in 1998, I'd have eaten your puppy's brain with a spoon."
El cantante, líder y guitarrista de la banda, Ben Gibbard, que además tiene otra banda paralela, The Postal Service, comentaba en una entrevista:
"I just don't feel like we really have anything to prove of it other than to ourselves and to making a record we really enjoy."
"It's really weird. It's really, really good, I think, but it's totally a curve ball, and I think it's gonna be a really polarizing record. But I'm really excited about it. It's really got some teeth. The landscape of the thing is way, way more lunar than the urban meadow sort of thing that has been happening for the last couple of records." "[It's also] louder and more dissonant and ... I think abrasive would be a good word to use. [We were influenced by] heavy, sludgy, slow metal [and] synth-punk band Brainiac".
El single "I WILL POSSESS YOUR HEART" apareció por primera vez en las radios el 24 de marzo.
